Tax packets contain names, addresses, Social Security numbers, employer identifiers, account numbers, and income. Convenience matters, but the safest workflow also minimizes copies and unnecessary transfers. Combining files locally removes one avoidable transfer: the source documents do not have to be uploaded to a third-party merge server.

Build the packet before you merge

Start from a checklist supplied by your tax preparer or filing service. Typical groups include identity and organizer pages, W-2 and 1099 income forms, estimated-payment records, deduction documents, and supporting statements. Leave out unrelated files. A smaller, deliberate packet is easier to review and exposes less information if it is ever sent to the wrong place.

Use a predictable document order

Put a cover sheet or organizer first, followed by income forms, deduction records, and supporting schedules. Within each group, use a consistent order such as employer, institution, or date. PDF Boost AI lets you move each source file up or down before merging. The merge preserves that file order, so settle the sequence before downloading.

Clean each source file first

Rotate sideways scans, remove blank scanner backs, and split out pages that do not belong. Check that photographs are readable and that no edge cuts through a number. Perform these corrections before the merge; fixing one source is simpler than rebuilding a large packet after a reviewer finds a missing page.

What local processing protects

The Merge PDF tool reads and combines files in the current browser tab. The originals are not posted to PDF Boost AI, and the merged result is created as a download on your device. This reduces exposure to a remote conversion service, but it does not secure an infected device, an unsafe browser extension, cloud-synced download folders, or the delivery method you choose afterward.

The merged file is not automatically encrypted

Combining documents does not add a password or encryption. Treat the result as sensitive even though the merge happened locally. Password protection is a separate feature and is not currently part of the Merge tool. Use your tax professional's secure portal or another approved encrypted channel instead of ordinary email whenever possible.

Perform a page-by-page check

Open the downloaded packet and compare it with your checklist. Confirm the first and last page of every source, look for duplicate pages, and verify that small identifying numbers remain readable. Give the file a neutral, useful name such as Tax-Packet-2025.pdf; avoid putting a Social Security number or full account number in the filename.

Reduce leftover copies

Keep the authoritative originals according to your record-retention needs, but remove temporary scans, email attachments, and duplicate working packets when they are no longer necessary. Empty the device's trash according to your normal security practice. Local merging reduces one data trail; careful storage and delivery complete the job.
